International Women's Day

March 8th we celebrated International Women’s Day. Far too often in this country and abroad women are unappreciated and overlooked for their contributions to their family, town, country and economy. I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some statistics that support the importance of our better half and some badass women entrepreneurs. In 2012, Women owned businesses generated $1.4 Trillion which is up 18.7% from 2007’s $1.2 Trillion. 9.9 Million firms or 35.8% of all firms were owned by women in 2012 which is up 26.8% from 2007’s 7.8 Million. Women entrepreneurs are quickly catching up with their male counterparts and the following are some of the pioneers who are leading the wave.

Oprah Winfrey - Oprah is one of America’s favorite TV personality’s, she got her career started in the 80’s and since then has not only blossomed into a household name, she is a straight up-and-down boss. Oprah is the founder of Harpo Productions, Oprah Winfrey Network and Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Oprah’s current net worth is incredibly high at $3 Billion making her one of the richest people on earth.

Sofia Vergara - Not only is Sofia Vergara a very popular actress on American Television show Modern Family, she is also the cofounder of one of the biggest talent agencies for Latin American. Founded in 1994 Latin World Entertainment is a multi-service company that connects celebrities with big brands and just last year brought in $27 Million. Sofia has a net worth of $100 Million.

Tory Burch - Tory is the founder, Chairman, CEO and Designer at Tory Burch a leading women’s high end clothing brand. Tory started her self named clothing brand in 2004 and the following year Oprah named her the next biggest thing in fashion. The following day her website had 8 million visitors. In the past 13 years her company has grown to 190 stores worldwide and can be found in over 3,000 department stores. In 2015 Tory was named the 73rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine and has a net worth of $1 Billion.

Beyonce - I mean, I think we all know what this icon has done musically but did you know she’s a powerful business woman as well? Not only does Beyonce own her record label Parkwood Entertainment, she also started a clothing label with her mother called House of Dereon in 2004. In 2012 she opened an online marketplace where you can buy apparel and accessories inspired by her music and brand. Beyonce’s net worth is $290 Million.

The entrepreneur world is growing rapidly, women are becoming more and more of a leading force. Many women are tired of being paid less than their male counterparts merely because of their gender and are taking matters into their own hands. Women are starting businesses twice as fast as men. The future for women entrepreneurs is looking brighter than ever and I for one love every bit of it. Happy International Women’s day! Good luck ladies!
